Resources for The Tempest

Filed under: Shakespeare, Tempest — Prof Internets @ 4:31 pm

As you can imagine, there are tons of sites about Shakespeare on the web, and most of them are not that great. One good place to look for information and links to additional information is Mr William Shakespeare and the Internet. This site is updated frequently, and it does have a good section on academic resources that are worthwhile. Among other things, it has a nice list of half a dozen good articles on The Tempest. There’s also a nice biography section if you want to explore that idea of Shakespeare as Prospero.

Internet Shakespeare Editions from the University of Victoria has some good articles and information on the play. They also have facsimiles and searchable text online, so if you are looking for a particular quote, or to see if there are similar passages in other plays, this is a great place to start. Here’s their Tempest page.

Theatre History has a nice, basic essay on the play – the links at the bottom of the page are to more specific essays on aspects of the text.

If you are looking for more general information on Shakespeare’s theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe is a good starting place (try the “exhibition” or “education” sections).

If you want to see the play in performance, youtube has some nice snippets of performances of The Tempest (looks like it might have been part of a student assignment, as there are a number of versions of act 2). Searching “Shakespeare’s Tempest” gives you a list of things to check out.

Lost your book? Etext of the play.

Finally, here’s Waterhouse’s picture of Miranda, for a little inspiration:
